On August 26, 2024, the English Eloquence Mastery Club organised a workshop focused on educating students about animal rights. The event aimed to broaden students’ understanding of the mistreatment animals endure and to encourage them to spread awareness about these issues, ensuring that animals receive the help they need. The activity was also aimed to raise funds for animal welfare as all funds raised from this event was donated to animal shelters.
During the workshop, Dr. Thong Sze Yee, an expert in animal rights, was invited and spoke to the students about the importance of animal advocacy. She explained that animals are sentient beings capable of experiencing pain, pleasure, fear, and joy, which justifies their right to live free from unnecessary suffering, exploitation, and harm. Dr. Thong also discussed the challenges animals face in industrialised farming, scientific research, and entertainment, and she urged students to raise awareness and advocate for better conditions and protections for animals.
Dr. Thong also highlighted the role of social media in spreading awareness, encouraging them to use these platforms to share information and inspire others to support animal rights. She also emphasised the importance of education in shaping attitudes toward animals, advocating for the inclusion of animal welfare topics in school curricula. She encouraged students to volunteer to help save many more animals that are suffering. After a Q&A session to clear up any misconceptions, the Animal Advocacy Workshop ended with bright smiles, all captured in a group photo.
A total number of 202 students and teachers attended the workshop. The English Eloquence Mastery Club hopes that the workshop taught students that animals deserve to be treated with kindness and respect, just like humans. By advocating for animal rights, students can play a crucial role in making the world a better place for animals.
